2006 NCBC Camp & WW Boxes
|
| |
In May of this year the Hot Springs Village Woodworkers Club (HSVWW) Inc. was approached by Norine Westerbeck of the Christian Record Services Inc. for the National Camps for Blind Children (NCBC). The request was for the HSVWW, Inc. to provide 90 pre-cut and pre-drilled boxes for use in teaching blind people to build a box. The club went out and made 10 boxes for patterns, then lined up 8 teams of 3 to make 10 boxes each. When the boxes were completed, Red White the club project director, delivered 90 boxes to Camp Yorktown Bay on Lake Ouachita on July 16th. When we went to the camp to see how the boxes were being used, we were pleased to see 3 blind participants pounding nails and completing the box with a lid and a screwed on top handle. When they finished, they all had big smiles.
The instructors were Kim and Alan Hertle, They were very busy helping participants assemble the predrilled pieces and assist nail pounding. There were 86 participants this year in the NCBC camp. Their ages ranged from young teens to older adults. Additional Camp Yorktown Bay activities included, horse back riding, nature area, wall climbing, swimming, boating, arts and crafts and more. The Hot Springs Village Woodworkers Club is proud to be a part of the learning process for these special campers.
Introductory information on NCBC and Camp Yorktown Bay is provided below along with several pictures taken during the visit to see the boxes being assembled.
